Downtown riverfront hotels in Jacksonville

Wake up on the wide St. Johns River, in the middle of the action for games, concerts, museums and the Riverwalk. Here's who a downtown stay suits, the Northbank-versus-Southbank call, and how to get around once you land.

Who a downtown stay is right for

Downtown Jacksonville hugs both banks of the St. Johns, so a riverfront hotel here means skyline-and-water views out the window and most of the city's marquee venues within a short walk or a quick boat ride. It's a great fit for some travelers and the wrong call for others, so let's be straight about it.

Stay downtown if you're here for an event or a game. EverBank Stadium, the arena and the riverfront amphitheater all sit in the downtown sports and entertainment district, so basing yourself here means walking or hopping the river taxi instead of circling for parking. The same goes for the riverfront museums, the Riverwalk and the monthly Art Walk. Business travelers and conference-goers also land downtown for the simple reason that this is where the offices and the convention spaces are.

It's also a genuinely lovely base if you just love being on the water. The free Riverwalk runs miles along both banks, Friendship Fountain anchors the Southbank, and the views back across the river at the skyline are the best in the city. Park your car once and let the bridges, the Skyway monorail and the little river taxi do the rest.

The honest catch: downtown is quieter at night than the beaches or Riverside. Bay Street and a few rooftop bars stay lively, and event nights buzz, but a normal weekday evening winds down early, and there's visible construction around the Riverfront Plaza and stadium areas right now. If a buzzing late-night scene or toes-in-the-sand mornings matter more, weigh the other stay zones first.

Pick your bank

Northbank vs. Southbank

The river splits downtown into two sides, and both have hotels right on the water. They connect by the river taxi and the bridges, so you can't really go wrong, but here's how they differ.

The shortcut between them: the St. Johns River Taxi runs little boats between the Northbank and Southbank docks, and it's by far the most fun way to swap sides. On Jaguars game days they add boats and sell an all-day pass that beats fighting for stadium parking. You can also walk the Main Street or Acosta bridges, or ride the free Skyway monorail on weekdays. More on all of it in our getting around guide.

Good to know

Common questions

Should I stay on the Northbank or the Southbank?

Both sit right on the St. Johns and both connect by the river taxi, so you can't really go wrong. The Northbank puts you in the urban core near Bay Street, the stadium district and most of downtown's bars and restaurants. The Southbank is a touch calmer, with Friendship Fountain, riverfront parks and big skyline-across-the-water views. Pick the Northbank if you want to walk to nightlife and events, the Southbank if you want a quieter base with the prettier view back at the skyline.

Is downtown Jacksonville a good place to stay for a Jaguars game?

Yes, if walkability on game day is your priority. EverBank Stadium sits right in the downtown sports and entertainment district, so a downtown riverfront hotel lets you walk or take the river taxi instead of fighting traffic and parking. The stadium is mid-renovation under its 'Stadium of the Future' project and playing at reduced capacity, so confirm event details before you book around a specific game.

How do I get between the two riverbanks without a car?

You have a few easy options: walk across the Main Street or Acosta bridges, ride the free Skyway monorail on weekdays, or hop the St. Johns River Taxi between the Northbank and Southbank docks. The little boats are the most fun way to cross and they add extra service on Jaguars game days.

Is downtown Jacksonville quiet at night?

Honestly, yes, much quieter than the beaches. Bay Street and a handful of rooftop bars stay lively, and event nights near the stadium and arena buzz, but on a normal weekday evening downtown winds down early and there's ongoing construction around the Riverfront Plaza and stadium areas. If you want a livelier night-time scene, the beaches or Riverside are a better base.

Can I walk to the Riverwalk and Friendship Fountain from a downtown hotel?

Yes. The Northbank and Southbank Riverwalk runs miles along both sides of the St. Johns and is free to stroll, and Friendship Fountain on the Southbank is free as well. From most downtown riverfront hotels you're a short walk to a stretch of Riverwalk, and the river taxi or a bridge crossing gets you to the other bank's attractions.
