Three days, no misses

A 3-Day Weekend in Jacksonville

Three days is the sweet spot for Jacksonville: enough for a real beach day, a full day in the city, and an easy day trip up or down the First Coast. Here’s the plan.

Here’s the thing locals know that the brochures won’t tell you: Jacksonville is huge — one of the largest cities by area in the contiguous U.S. — so a good weekend isn’t about cramming everything in. It’s about picking three clear zones and giving each one a full, unhurried day. Beach. City. A trip out of town. Do it in that order and you’ll never feel like you’re backtracking across a bridge at rush hour.

Day One

Salt Air & the Beaches

Start where the ocean is. Get sand on your feet, eat shrimp off the boat, and let the city wait until tomorrow.

STOP1
MORNING · 10AM

Settle in at the Beaches

Drop your bags first thing and let the salt air reset you. The Beaches communities are their own little world east of the Intracoastal — walkable, laid-back, and where you want to be based for a sun-first weekend. Park the car, grab a coffee, and don’t plan to drive again until tomorrow. See where to stay at the Beaches →

STOP2
MIDDAY · NOON

The Jacksonville Beach pier & the surf

This is the main event. Walk out on the Jacksonville Beach pier for the long view up and down the coast, then claim a patch of sand. The break here is gentle and consistent — good for a first surf lesson, a boogie board, or just floating around until your fingers wrinkle. Bring water; the sun is no joke. STOP3
EVENING · 6PM

Dinner at a Mayport shrimp shack

Drive ten minutes north to Mayport, the working fishing village where the shrimp boats actually dock. This is the freshest seafood you’ll eat all weekend, served at no-frills shacks with paper towels on the table and the boats in view. Order the shrimp, however they fry or steam it. STOP4
SUNSET · 8PM

Wind down at the Beaches Town Center

Close the day where Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach meet — the Beaches Town Center, a couple of walkable blocks of bars, ice cream, and live music a stone’s throw from the ocean. Grab a nightcap, listen to whoever’s playing, and watch the last of the light go pink over the water. Explore Neptune & Atlantic Beach →

Day Two

The City & the River

Today you cross the bridges and meet the Bold City proper — the St. Johns River, the historic neighborhoods, and the food and beer that make Jax tick.

STOP1
MORNING · 9:30AM

The riverfront — Riverwalk, Friendship Fountain & a museum

Begin downtown along the St. Johns. Stroll the Riverwalk, watch the water taxis cross, and swing past Friendship Fountain on the Southbank — a Jacksonville landmark since the ’60s. Pair it with a morning at one of the riverfront museums to beat the afternoon heat. It’s the easiest way to get your bearings on the city. Browse downtown things to do →

STOP2
MIDDAY · 12:30PM

Lunch & shopping in Riverside / Avondale

Head to Riverside and Avondale — the historic, oak-shaded heart of the city, full of bungalows, indie boutiques, and some of the best lunch spots in town. Wander Five Points, browse the shops, and take your time over a long lunch. This is where Jacksonville feels most like its quirky, creative self. Read the Riverside & Avondale guide →

STOP3
AFTERNOON · 4PM

A stop on the brewery trail

Jacksonville’s craft beer scene punches well above its weight. Pick a taproom in Riverside or out near the Beaches, post up on a patio, and reward your legs after a day of walking. One good pour and you’ll understand why locals are so proud of their brewery map. Follow the Jacksonville brewery trail →

STOP4
EVENING · 7:30PM

Dinner in San Marco

End the day in San Marco, the elegant little district built around a fountain-lined square. It’s the city’s sweet spot for a proper dinner — a cluster of strong restaurants, a vintage theater, and an easy, dressed-up-but-not-stuffy vibe. Linger. You’ve earned it. Read the San Marco guide →

Day Three

A Day Trip on the First Coast

Your last day, point the car out of town. Both of these are an easy drive and turn a good weekend into a great one. Pick one.

PICKA
SOUTH · ~45 MIN

St. Augustine — the oldest city

Drop down the coast to the oldest continuously occupied European-founded city in the country. Cobblestone lanes, a 17th-century stone fort, horse-drawn carriages, and a walkable old town packed with history at every corner. If you love a sense of the past, this is your day. Plan a St. Augustine day trip →

PICKB
NORTH · ~45 MIN

Amelia Island — Victorian seaport & beaches

Or head north to Amelia Island and the storybook town of Fernandina Beach: a preserved Victorian seaport, a downtown of porches and shrimp history, and wide, quiet beaches you can ride horses on. It’s the slower, prettier choice — history with sand attached. Plan an Amelia Island day trip →

STOP3
CAN’T DECIDE?

See the whole First Coast lineup

Springs, state parks, smaller beach towns — there’s more within day-trip range than just these two. If you’re torn, scan the full list and match the trip to your mood before you fuel up. See all Jacksonville day trips →

Tip: Book your lodging early on event weekends — a concert, a Jaguars home game or a festival can fill the Beaches and downtown fast (check what’s on while you’re here). Base yourself at the Beaches for a sand-first trip, or downtown for nightlife and walkability — compare both on the where-to-stay guide.
