San Marco

A Mediterranean-style square with its landmark lions, a historic theater, a celebrated brewery in an old ice factory, and some of the city’s best date-night dining.

Three stone lions and a walkable square

San Marco is a leafy, historic Southbank neighborhood about five minutes across the St. Johns River from downtown. Its whole identity is built around a Mediterranean-style square of 1920s Spanish and Italianate storefronts gathered around a fountain crowned by three stone lions — a deliberate nod to Venice’s Piazza San Marco, lions and all.

This is the part of Jacksonville to come to when you want a walkable district of independent shops and restaurants rather than a mall or a beach scene. It suits couples on a date night, foodies, and architecture lovers in equal measure. Days here are easy: browsing boutiques, free chocolate samples, coffee on a sunny patio. Nights are the real show — dinner, craft beer, and live music, all within a few blocks of the fountain.

If you’re mapping out a Jacksonville trip, San Marco pairs naturally with its riverfront sibling across the water — see our Riverside & Avondale guide — and slots neatly into a city-wide list of things to do.

Getting around: Park once and walk. There’s free on-street parking around Balis Park and the Square (typically a 3-hour limit), with spaces right in front of the shops and across from the lion fountain. Arrive earlier on weekend evenings, when the dinner crowds fill the curbs. The Square itself is compact and very walkable, so you can leave the car in one spot for most of a visit. If you want breakfast at the original Metro Diner, it’s about a mile south on Hendricks Ave — worth driving down for.
The plan

A perfect half-day in San Marco

If you only have an afternoon and evening, here’s how a local would string it together.

  1. Start in the Square. Head to Balis Park for photos of the three-lions fountain, then browse the boutiques and shops ringing it.
  2. Grab a sweet. Pick up a free chocolate-popcorn sample at Peterbrooke Chocolatier and poke around San Marco Bookstore a few doors down.
  3. Eat on the Square. Have lunch or an early dinner at Taverna, or go for pizza inside the historic theater building at Electric Dough.
  4. Beer at the ice factory. Walk over to Aardwolf Brewing in the 1920s former ice factory for a flight on the patio.
  5. Cap the night. Finish with a show at Theatre Jacksonville or live music at Jack Rabbits — both right in the neighborhood. Looking for more? See our date-night ideas.
