Jacksonville on a zero-dollar budget

Jacksonville is huge — one of the largest cities by area in the contiguous U.S. — and a lot of its best stuff is wide open and free. The St. Johns River cuts right through the middle of town, so most of these spots are strung along the water or out toward the beaches. Pack a water bottle, wear sunscreen, and you can stitch together a full day or three without paying for a single thing. Below are the spots we'd actually send a friend to.

Riverfront landmarks

JAXFL
Southbank Riverwalk

Friendship Fountain

This giant choreographed fountain on the Southbank has been a Jacksonville landmark for generations, and it still earns it. By day it's a great place to let kids run; after dark it lights up and the jets dance to a color show, with the downtown skyline glittering across the St. Johns River behind it. Honestly the best free skyline view in the city — bring a blanket, sit on the steps, and watch the bridges light up. It pairs perfectly with a stroll along the Riverwalk.

Northbank & Southbank

The St. Johns Riverwalk

There are miles of boardwalk hugging both sides of the river downtown — the Southbank Riverwalk (where Friendship Fountain lives) and the Northbank Riverwalk over by the entertainment district. Walk the boards, watch the dolphins and water taxis go by, cross one of the lit-up bridges, and you've got a free evening. It's flat, scenic and people-watch-able, and it connects a lot of downtown's other free spots together. Great at sunset.

History & art for nothing

JAXFL
Fort George Island

Kingsley Plantation

Out on Fort George Island, near the Talbot Islands at the north end of town, sits Florida's oldest surviving plantation house. It's a National Park Service site, so it's completely free to visit — you can walk the grounds, see the historic plantation house and the remains of the tabby slave cabins, and read the unflinching history of the people who were enslaved here. It's a sobering, important stop, and the drive out the dirt road under the live oaks is half the experience. Combine it with the nearby beaches for a full north-end day.

Cummer Museum · Riverside

Free hours at the Cummer Museum

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens in Riverside is one of the prettiest spots in the city, with formal riverfront gardens out back. You can get in for free on the first Saturday of the month and on the third Tuesday evening — that's when locals in the know go. Wander the galleries, then spend just as long in the gardens by the river. Check current hours before you head over, since free days do shift.

MOCA · Downtown

MOCA Jacksonville, first floor

The Museum of Contemporary Art downtown keeps its first floor free to the public, always — so you can pop in, see whatever's installed, and enjoy a little air conditioning without paying admission. It's a perfect quick stop while you're wandering downtown between the Riverwalk and the Art Walk.

Saturdays · Riverside

Riverside Arts Market

Every Saturday, year-round, the Riverside Arts Market sets up under the Fuller Warren Bridge right on the river. Local artists, makers, farmers and food vendors fill the space, there's usually live music, and it's free to wander even if you don't buy a thing. It's one of the most quintessentially Jacksonville mornings you can have — grab a coffee, browse the booths, and watch the boats roll by under the bridge.

Monthly · Downtown

First Wednesday Art Walk

On the first Wednesday of every month, from 5 to 9 p.m., downtown Jacksonville throws open its galleries, studios and storefronts for a free, self-guided Art Walk. Stroll the streets, duck into galleries, catch street performers and pop-ups, and soak up the downtown energy after dark. It's free to attend — bring a few dollars only if a piece of art or a snack catches your eye.

The Beaches

Jacksonville, Neptune & Atlantic Beach

Here's the best part: Jacksonville's beaches are free. Jax Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach all run right into each other along the same gorgeous stretch of Atlantic sand, and none of them charge you to lay out a towel. Swim, walk, watch the surfers, or just dig your feet in. It's the easiest free day in the whole city. See more on our beaches & outdoors guide.

Big Talbot Island

Boneyard Beach driftwood

Up at Big Talbot Island, on the wild northern coast, Boneyard Beach is one of the most photographed spots in northeast Florida — a beach littered with the salt-bleached skeletons of fallen live oaks and cedars, dragged down to the sand by erosion. It's surreal, gorgeous, and free to walk. Pair it with Kingsley Plantation for a north-end double feature, and bring your camera.

Just wander the neighborhoods

JAXFL
All over town

Avondale, Five Points, San Marco & Springfield

Some of the best free entertainment in Jacksonville is just walking its neighborhoods. Window-shop historic Avondale's Shoppes district, wander funky Five Points, sit on a bench in the European-style San Marco Square, or do the Springfield mural walk to spot the colorful street art tucked through that historic district. It costs nothing to stroll, and it's the fastest way to feel like you actually know the city. Dig deeper in our neighborhoods guide.

Free
Heads-up: Free museum days, market schedules and Art Walk hours can shift seasonally, so it's always worth a quick check with the venue before you make the drive. Everything else here — the beaches, the Riverwalk, Friendship Fountain, the neighborhoods — is open and free pretty much any day you show up.
